Maitake, also known as Hen of the Woods, grows in North America, Europe, and Asia. It is a fungus that is white on the inside and has a brownish exterior. Maitake mushrooms are used in holistic wellness plant based product formulations because they contain beta glucans which help to boost the immune system. Maitake mushrooms grow in the United States. Maitake mushrooms grow on oak, beech, or hemlock trees in North America. Maitake mushrooms are often seen under sugar maple trees which are typically found in the northern region of North America. Maitake mushrooms can also be found Eastern Canada and New England on dead hardwood tree stumps. Maitake mushrooms are able to grow on sticks or logs that have fallen into the ground where they can grow for up to two years until big enough to be harvested. Maitake mushrooms can also be grown in a lab but not well since Maitake mushroom’s natural habitat is based on a living organism, a tree.

Maitake grows in the late summer and fall, typically extracted using a hot water extraction process. The mushrooms are boiled in water and then the resulting liquid is strained.
