Bergamot is a short tree or shrub with a broad, orange-yellow colored fruit. These fruits are covered in a waxy skin and usually have a thick rind. The inner part of the fruit can be peeled to reveal a white portion called the pith.

Traditionally grown in Italy, France, and Algeria. It can be grown in most countries globally. At harvest it is best to wait for when the fruits are ripe, the plant matures between December and March.

However, other compounds such as limonene, pinene, caryophyllene, and terpineol have been found in bergamot essential oil. Linalool is a natural monoterpene alcohol that is a common fragrance chemical used in bergamot aromatherapy oil products.
